The Child Dental Benefits Schedule, often called CDBS, helps eligible children aged 0 to 17 access basic dental services through Medicare. Everton Hills Dental can help families understand CDBS appointments and bulk-bill eligible covered services within the available benefit cap.
Please bring your child’s Medicare card to the appointment.
For eligible children whose 2-year CDBS period starts in 2026.
The CDBS is an Australian Government program that covers part or all of the cost of some basic dental services for eligible children. It is designed to help families access preventive and general dental care.
Children may be eligible if they are aged 0 to 17 for at least one day in the calendar year, are eligible for Medicare, and meet Services Australia payment criteria.
CDBS covers eligible basic dental services such as examinations, X-rays, cleaning, fissure sealing, fillings, root canals and extractions.
The benefit cap is set by Medicare and applies over a 2 calendar year period. The cap is indexed yearly, so the available amount can vary by treatment period.
CDBS eligibility is determined by Medicare and Services Australia. You do not need to apply for the program. If your child is eligible, Services Australia will usually send a letter.
Eligibility and remaining balance can change. Please check your child’s eligibility before booking or ask the clinic team what information is needed for your appointment.
For children whose CDBS 2-year period starts in 2026, Services Australia lists the cap as up to $1,158 over 2 consecutive calendar years. Children whose period started in an earlier calendar year may have a different cap.
CDBS covers a range of basic dental services when your child is eligible and has available benefits. Your dentist will explain treatment needs, costs and whether a service is covered before care begins.
Dental examinations help your dentist assess your child’s teeth, gums and oral development.
Cleaning and preventive advice may help support children’s oral health between visits.
X-rays may be recommended where clinically required to assess areas not visible during an exam.
Covered services may include fillings, extractions and other basic treatment where clinically required.
A CDBS appointment is similar to a standard children’s dental visit. The team will confirm details, check eligibility information where possible, and explain any recommended care before treatment proceeds.
Bring your child’s Medicare card and any relevant CDBS eligibility information to the appointment.
Your dentist will assess your child’s oral health and discuss any recommended treatment options.
If treatment is recommended, the team will explain whether it is covered by CDBS and whether any out-of-pocket cost may apply.
CDBS does not cover all types of dental care. Your dentist will tell you if a service is outside the program before proceeding.
